please stop making sense

Lucid Dreaming

Sometimes, in the deepest depths of dreams, a person sleeping will encounter a hint. In this, a visit to a secret place in the unconscious, the dreamer realizes, through this, that it ‘is all a dream’. The idea of objectively being able to discard the reality of the dream, as something lesser, has a series of quite interesting side-effects. For one, the immersion of the senses into the internal kaleidoscope of the undistracted brain can render a dream that in every sense seems more real that waking life reality. With your imaginary eyes, everything can be seen in incredible detail, sounds are more descriptive and distinctive; amplified in every direction, and the air is so perfectly pure that it becomes honey sweet. The dreamer realizes that this is the inside of themselves, and everything that appears around them is actually in their mind. This, somehow, gives the dreamer total control over every aspect of their dream; they can through pure will become an omnipotent force/object that can grasp and govern every molecule in the internal universe of their dream. This has confused and inspired a lot of people. What is ordinary reality, really, if this constructed reality now seems even more real? Many ancient religious texts, especially Eastern, agree with what consciousness studies and quantum physics has now enables us to imply; that the external world might not be as real or true as we first thought. What we have is an understanding created from a distillation of reality through our senses. Objective reality turns into subjective reality once observed, like the wave/particle dilemma in physics, where light behaves in one way on its own, and another way if closely observed. In a way, we could only really perceive reality if we had no organs of perceptions; maybe true reality is what it’s like to be unborn or long buried; in the eternal night, if you like. Descriptions of an object can be infinite, and the angles, insides and outsides, the aspects of an object is also infinite, and therefore any attempt to see or describe it is inherently incomplete. Internally, though, in a dream, what our senses perceive is not an external objective reality filtered through our senses, from the outside to the inside of our brains, but already originating from the inside, from our memory banks and our subconscious. This means that, objectively, dream reality does not have to go through the bastardization and ‘grinding down of’ that external reality has to; it is not as enormously incomprehensive as the external universe in all its phenomena, but is limited to our own memory and understanding of it. Still, internal reality is multiplied by our creativity and our imagination, enabling the fantastics; the superhuman and the hyper-real. If we could imagine a higher order, or a third plane of existence; a beyond-reality that would be to waking life what waking life is to dreaming, maybe we could unleash our creativities and imaginations in a similar way, but in an explosion instead of an implosion. We could wake up from being awake, still in an awaken state, and escape all restrictions, constraints and limitations imposed on us by the world around us. A possible shortcut to this might be simply to place subjectivity above objectivity in the hierarchies we order things into. A simple acceptance that the search for truth is meaningless, and that any finds or conclusions in that search automatically fail as soon as they become ‘static’, so to speak. As soon as the search ends, truth ends. Lucid Dreaming, not the act, but the concept, might be the key that unlocks and unfolds a myriad of new realities, and an army of new truths to pursue. This hunt will provide us with momentum and velocity; the will and power to burst into society and overtake it; to replace the old and worn with nothing and everything; with dreams, hallucination and the determination to obliterate the veil of ‘truth’ inflicted upon the turmoil of indefinable actuality.

Do you keep a notebook?

Tom Waits: Oh yeah, everybody does! Life is too confusing. Monkey wrenches, pocket knives, dog food, instant coffee, lipstick. You gotta get it organized somehow.
